Media and Public Relations
The Media Communications team in CABS advances and protects the image and reputation of MSU through earned media and management of relationships with the media, expanding public understanding of the value of MSU to Michigan and the world.
The team has primary responsibility for institutional interactions with the media and for establishing MSU’s media communications and public relations priorities, processes, and procedures.
We are responsible for identifying, writing, pitching, and tracking stories about the activities of MSU, its academic colleges, and other units that advance MSU’s brand and reputation and for developing news content for the MSU home page, MSUToday, and other communications vehicles.
What We Do
Lead Media Relations
Telling a story effectively requires an understanding of the current media environment, detailed planning, and targeted distribution of news to the right journalists. We work with units to develop strategic approaches to story placement.
Develop and Pitch Stories
Media Communications selects stories to develop and pitch based on inherent news value, potential for national and major regional coverage, and alignment with MSU’s strategic priorities that enhance and validate reputation. Learn more about priority areas.
We craft compelling news releases accompanied by photos, graphics, videos, and podcasts that best reach MSU's key audiences through digital, print, and broadcast media.
We manage the MSUToday website, weekly e-mail, and daily pride point, providing the Spartan community and the media with the latest MSU news stories as well as feature content and videos created by CABS.
Manage Issues and Crises
We help identify and analyze complicated issues that have potential negative impact on the university’s reputation and develop strategies to ensure that clear, consistent, and accurate messages are communicated to the right audiences.
Work with Campus Communicators
Our team works with communicators within the university’s academic colleges and many other units. With a staff of 15, we rely heavily on unit communicators to evaluate activity within their units against the priority criteria and bring to our attention story ideas that align with MSU’s strategic focus. Media Communications Procedures
MSU’s media procedures ensure consistency and coordination of information released to the media and foster positive relations with media outlets—local, regional, national, and international. We provide assistance to units seeking news coverage or that are responding to media inquiries. Training builds on the expertise of MSU faculty and staff and takes into account not only the latest technologies, but also the outlets that work best for media relations within the context of the university’s mission.
